Seagate Expansion 250 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive ST902504EXA101-RK

I bought this external hard drive to use both on my Mac at home and on the PC at the office and carry files back and forth. It only works efficiently on the PC. It will not allow me to add files from my Mac to this little HD. However, I have another external HD made by CM (?- Hard to read) which works on both platforms. Seagate’s technical support is very difficult to work with. And there was no word of the platform issue on the box. This is the 2nd Seagate product we’ve had (the other was Free Agent auto back up system) and both have been dogs.

I got this drive at best buy tonight $160, after looking online I decided on this nicely designed (two stars) portable drive. I have 500 GB to back up with time machine. The drive never started up, it just had a blinking green light probably a good choice otherwise. I will return it tomorrow, and I might get a western digital. I wish they made a 2.5 inch Drobo.

Advertised as Hardware Platform: PC, Mac but it’s pc only. Tech support says you can reformat the drive but will not auto shut down. Said to get the drive made for mac. But then you cannot go from mac to pc. They did not reccomend it with this drive either if reformatted. Said if I try be sure to back up first. Since I’m using as a backup drive as well that doesn’t work. Other wise it’s a fine drive. Just not as advertised. Does anyone make such a thing?

It’s a shame slow clunky USB is still so much cheaper than the vastly superior incredibly faster and more efficient FireWire or I wouldn’t be buying drives like these. Usually I’ve had no problems with Seagate… until this drive. As some others have mentioned here, Seagate puts a bunch of mostly worthless space-hogging proprietary crapware on this drive for newbs or clueless who need hand holding and follow whatever computers tell them blindly like sheep (we call them PC users). Those of us pros however aren’t interested in the giveaway stuff, we know what we want and how to use it, which with this drive came with a problem, as stated elsewhere for the Mac it refuses to reformat through Utilities. Time and time again it’ll fail regardless of the setting you put it on. Due to some time constraints as I was travel a lot and needed a “quick” ([sic] USB unlike FireWire, nothing is ‘quick’ about it) backup, I found it would take as a two-partition drive, which is… odd. It’s like the drive has some type of firmware insisting it stay in FAT format for fools who like to be antiquated. When I get back to this drive I’ll try to command-line reformat it and update the review.
For now this drive I don’t recommend for Mac users. It is good looking if that floats your boat and if you like more software to try to keep track of and use a PC you’re probably into punishment by your computer choice anyways so you may like this drive. Everyone else, think long and hard about it.
